Five tips to help you stress less and sleep better

Want to sleep better? We don’t believe in new year’s resolutions — and by now, they’ve probably started to wane! But one thing we could do better at is… sleeping!

One of the most fundamental things for our health and wellbeing, yet so many of us are doing it wrong. Too little, too much, poor quality, restlessness, and our fast-paced, stressful lifestyles have a big part to play in how well we (don’t) sleep.

Whether it’s working too late or staying up past your bedtime to ‘just one more episode’ on Netflix or frantically checking our phones and ‘doomscrolling’ before bed, it’s no wonder we’re all feeling stressed and sleep-deprived!

One of the best ways to ease into a peaceful slumber is to reduce stress. Sometimes it’s the simplest of things that can help to soothe our stress levels and, in turn, give us a better night’s sleep.

Here are our top five tips to help you stress less and sleep better.

Bedtime-bathtime

To set our body and mind up for sleep, we must give ourselves space and time to wind down. Run a bath with lavender bath salts (we love these Feather and Down sleep salts), which help to ease tension and relax your body so you can have a better night.

Guided meditations

Get comfy and tune into a guided mediation. Learn how to ease tension in your body and reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. Apps such as Headspace and Calm are perfect for guiding you through and even have bedtime stories to help get you off to sleep!

Write it down

Find your mind racing before bed? Wake up with a to-do list running through your head? Write your thoughts down before bed, or make a list of everything on your mind and things you have to do the next day, so they don’t need to take up space whilst you sleep.

Breathe deep

Whether you go to bed feeling anxious or find yourself waking in the night, pause for a few moments and take some deep relaxing breaths. Breathing into the diaphragm (belly breathing) helps calm the nervous system and take us out of fight or flight mode. Try this simple technique when you feel stressed or anxious or just before going to bed.

Teatime

Another great way to help calm your body is to drink herbal teas, specifically those with camomile and lavender. Try a soothing herbal tea before bed and switch from caffeinated drinks to non-caffeinated from about 2 pm.

Make good sleep your priority this year.
